Things are not like they used to be.

Things around powell valley just isn't like they use to be. Talking to a gentlemen today about how when he played at wise just the color of the jersey was intimidating, they knew they had a tough, hard hitting game to be played.

These seniors from this team their record together has been very hard to swallow.
    0-3 vs Burton
    1-1 vs Breathitt
    0-2 vs Seymour
    2-2 vs Clintwood
    0-1 vs Richlands
4-1 vs Gate City (including losing a 6 game win streak to this team)
They have managed to not win one LPD title, lost 2 Region D titles, and gotten the "mercy rule" enforced against them before halftime in semi- state.

Were truly not what we once were and it's not looking like we are going back anytime soon. Congrats to Region D Div 1 Clintwood Green Wave and also to Region D Div 2 Gate City Blue Devils. Your hard work has paid off for you, good luck in the state playoffs.

i was thinking the same....no championships for pv this year.

the vikes had very good skill people, but lacked the size and athleticism up front. i don't think you can blame the seniors though cause they just didn't have it up front and championships are won the line of scrimmage. they did give it their all, but face it....this team was not one of the teams of old, nowhere close.

i can't see any possible state titles in their future. same for burton, losing stewart will be huge, huge, huge.

IMO, PVs loss today will help the program IF it moves them out of the spread offense. GC got down and rolled the PV O and D lines...and that goes back to the philosophy that the low hat wins. And, you can't be the low hat when you start a play from a 2 point stance as a lineman. GC did it the old fashioned way...proving once again that a run based offense is the way to win championships. PV will reload and be back...but hopefully not in a finesse based incarnation.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

The seniors on that team did what not seniors since the Jones brothers teams had done. Play in 4 consecutive Region D finals, they won the LPD in 04 and went 6-1 against GC. Played in two state final fours. Pretty comparable to what Norton has done and it's viewed as their greatest run ever, some people need to tone the expectations down a bit. I dont see Thomas or Julius walking through the door up their at PV, or Forty Jackson either for that matter.

The truth is, until about 12 years ago, PV had no 4 year seniors, cuz you weren't varsity til 10th grade. Before the teams that featured the Joneses, PV played a hard nosed game with half the talent of this year's team but 3 times the football players. Maybe you can't remember that, or teams stepping on the field against teams from upstate that were bigger and faster...and overcoming and winning. I cut no slack to PV cuz they have been to 2 state final fours or anything else. I played with a group that couldn't compete with this year's team in a track meet, but would destroy them on the gridiron. Hell, my bunch only had 3 varsity years, and brought home 2 trophies will less athletic talent. So, I cut PV no slack...but that's how it is.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.

Since 05 we've had the smallest teams I can remember, granted I've only been following PV football since 94. Realistically to me we should contend for the LPD/Region D title. Which I think we do, winning state titles require great skill and luck. How many teams have done what PV has done since Julius left? PV people complain about we've done since then but really is there another school in D2 that has done that in Region D? D2 is a different animal today, for the kids today to win they have to beat teams that were in AA back in the 80's. Dont get me wrong they should be A but we were it, back then. Today Giles/GC/Gretna/etc are down from the AA ranks to single A.

Forget the spread, get back to basics, and find someone who can motivate the kids.
